Bio
Arturo Alfonso Schomburg was a Puerto Rican historian, writer, curator, and activist of African and German descent, renowned for his extensive research and documentation of the contributions of Afro-Latin Americans and African Americans to society. Born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, he moved to New York City in 1891, where he became a prominent intellectual figure during the Harlem Renaissance. Schomburg amassed a vast collection of literature, art, and historical documents related to the African diaspora, which became the foundation for the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, a division of the New York Public Library. His dedication to unearthing and preserving Black history has had a lasting impact on the recognition and appreciation of African heritage, profoundly influencing both the Latino and African American communities.
